Greetings From Dr. Marcel! Welcome to our First Straight from Fourth Street issue of 2011! Back in early February the groundhog (is that a fancy name for a gopher?) did not see his shodow, so Spring will be early this year! My fantastic orthodontics team and I have already laid our our goals for this year and have planned our event calendar. Look forward to seeing us at the usual events downtown: Farmer's Market, Downtown Halloween, the Christmas Parade and Snow at Lizzie Fountain. But we have some new fun events planned, as well. Be sure to check our website and the next Straight from Fourth Street issue for more details! In the meantime, if you are like me, you are looking forward to some to the following things: more warm weather, Farmer's Market, eating outside, lacrosse and baseball seasons, the World Champion Giats starting Spring training and picking up where they left off last October, and (yes, I have been sayng this for 20 years) my San Jose Sharks making it to the Stanley Cup Finals! I hop to see you soon! Peace, Dr. Tom

Autumn 2010

Wow, what an exciting summer I had
... flying a plane, jumping off cliffs in
Hawaii, scuba diving, climbed the
Leaning Tower of Pisa, played with a
tiger cub, rode a tractor, went to a
bunch of beaches, did a zip line,
attended the LPGA Avion Master’s
tournament in France, visits to
Europe, Australia, New York and a
dozen other places ... Well, I personally
did not do all that, but you all
did and took your Tom-a-long!!!!
Thank you! I had a blast. I am glad
everybody is back safe and sound.
Please checkout the photos on
Facebook – they are really funny.
Let’s do it again next year!
Now we are back to reality ... school,
soccer, basketball and getting ready
for Halloween. Those of you that
have been with the office over the
years know what fun we have in
October through to December. Read
on to hear more about our contests
and events.
We hope to see you soon!

Welcome summer!!! What took you so long to get here? Oh, well. The sun feels good and we forgive you for holding out so long.

What a fun time summer is in the office. Rodeo week, Sno-cones, Beach party, Hawaii Month (that we stretch out over 6 weeks!) are just a few of the activities. We have revamp the annual postcard contest as a Tom-a-long contest (think Flat Stanley)….read on for more details!

May was our fifth year to celebrate Parent Appreciation Month and we had a fantastic time. The response was great. We had wonderful participation in the parent-only contests and got to give out some unique prizes to all those winners. Way to go Lori Williams for winning the Grand Prize of $200 Certificate to Purple Orchid Spa package. Thanks to all the parents out there who work hard to get kids to the office on time for their appointments, for being so involved with their care and for providing so much encouragement at home. Quite often we fail to realize what a significant difference a parent can make in achieving a great orthodontic result. Thank you, Moms, Dads and Grandparents!

We are definitely going to plan another Parent Appreciation Month again next year.

Have a fun and safe summer and congratulations to all of our graduates!

Peace,

Dr. Marcel

Aprils Showers Bring May Flowers

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2010! March is here and spring is in the air (as are the allergens) and after all the rain, the springtime activities are in full swing. Read on for all the office news, contest winners and upcoming events!

Last week I was asked a very common question and I thought I might take a moment to address it. The question is: "My child is only 6 or 7, when should I bring him in to see you?" A great question because quite often there are only s few permanent teeth in and it might seem like an inconvenience to see a young patient when nothing may need to be done for years. The truth, however, is I would ALWAYS rather see a child too early than too late. The American Association of Orthodontics actually recommends children be evaluated by an orthodontist at age 7.

In this office, 40% of our new patients examinations go into a monitoring or observation system and do not need immediate active treatment and this is just fine. Seeing kids early is beneficial for several reasons:

1. I can monitor facial growth and dental development and be assured we are starting a patient at the optimum time (and this varies greatly among individuals).

2. I can have a chart started and some simple records on file such as an x-ray, a photograph or exam notes in case the pedodontist or family dentist has an orthodontic question that may require an immediate answer (i.e. should we remove a problematic primary tooth?).

3. Should a traumatic accident occur, the child is already a patient of record and I can be called upon in case the pediatric dentist or family dentist is not available.

4. It allows me to predict the timing, nature and costs for future treatment for the family (really important for those big families or planning FSA benefits!)

5. Seeing a child for several observation visits gives me a chance to get to know the child a little more and, more importantly:

6. It gives the child a chance to become more familiar with me and the team.

7. And lastly, it allows the child to be eligible for contest prizes and events and enrolled in our very new and exciting "Cub Club"!

So in other words, please never feel like you are asking me to evaluate your children too early... I like it that way!

Hope to see you soon!

Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah one and all! I wish all of our wonderful patients and families a very special holiday season.

Although many of us have faced challenges in some form or another over the last year, we still have so much to be thankful. I look forward to some quality time with my family over the next several weeks cooking (my mom's famous apple cake recipe is included), playing games (cards and Tiger Woods'09 on the Wii) and maybe taking in a movie or two. My top 3 holiday movies or TV specials:

1) The original animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas... the little dog with the antlers, Cindy Lou Who, the heart that grew and grew... a classic.

2) The Christmas Story.... the dad, the little brother in the coat, the store Santa... every time I see "fragile" on a box I think "Fra-gee-LAY" in an Italian accent... priceless.

3) Home Alone... Great fun!

Honorable mention goes to the Family Man (Nicholas Cage and Tea Leoni do a remake of It's a Wonderful Life) and Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (because of Hermie the dentist!)

What's yours?

Once again, my team and I wish you all the best this holiday season!

Peace, Dr. Marcel

Get your sweaters out, Falls here.

Wow! Fall is already here! As much as I love the summer weather, there is so much to look forward to this time of year.... football season, hockey season (Go Sharks!), kids soccer, Halloween, and the food.... soups, stews, pot roast and my favorite: homemade lasagna! Is anybody else hungry right now?

We have had a fantastic summer. Thanks to all that came to our beach party and participated in all our contests. We have a lot to report and much to tell you about reguarding our upcoming events, so I am going to keep this short.....

Let's get to it. Read on! See you at the office!

No More Pencils, No More Books....

Yipee! No more book reports, no more math homework, no more tests! Just time for some fun in the sun! Summer camps, BBQ's and swim parties. Reading for the pleasure, going to movies during the week and road trips with the family. The season of fun has finally arrived!

Our annual postcard contest is now underway. This will be our 17th year! Whether you are traveling to Liverpool or staying in Livermore, whether you are going to Palm Springs or going to Grandma's in Pleasanton, send us a postcard (bought or homemade) and you are up for some cool prizes. Read on for more info.

My team and I would like to personally congratulate all of our 8th grade, high school and college graduates. You have worked hard and now you are ready to move on to that next phase of life. Congratulations! We hope your next step help make all uour goals and dreams come true!

Have a relaxing and safe summer, Everone!
